James W. Barge, Chief Financial Officer & EVP, Viacom, Inc.
Jimmy Barge is the executive vice president, chief financial officer of Viacom, Inc. In this role, Mr. Barge is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company’s financial planning, reporting and analysis, global tax and cash management strategies as well as Viacom’s information technology and risk management activities. He joined Viacom in January of 2008.
Prior to joining Viacom, Mr. Barge was the senior vice president and controller of Time Warner and was responsible for Time Warner’s overall financial planning, reporting and analysis, including budgeting and long range planning, and led several shared service and global process improvement initiatives. He joined Time Warner in March of 1995 as assistant controller.
Before joining Time Warner, Mr. Barge was with Ernst & Young, where he was the area industry leader of the Consumer Products Group and a partner in the West Region Accounting and Auditing Department. During that period, he had regional responsibility for consultations with clients across all industries, including a heavy concentration of high-tech clients in Silicon Valley, on a wide variety of accounting and SEC-related matters.
Prior to assuming his regional responsibilities in August of 1992, Mr. Barge was a partner in the national office of Ernst & Young, where he was responsible for the resolution of SEC accounting and reporting issues for many of the firm's largest clients. He also served as Ernst & Young’s liaison with the SEC.
Prior to his national office assignment, Mr. Barge was selected to participate in the Professional Accounting Fellow Program in the SEC’s Office of the Chief Accountant in Washington, D.C. Prior to the SEC fellowship, Mr. Barge served a variety of clients in the Atlanta office of Ernst & Young, including The Coca-Cola Company and Coca-Cola Enterprises. In 1982, he was selected as a participant in Ernst & Young’s international program, where he worked in London serving a wide variety of international clients.
Mr. Barge is a director, chair of the Nominating and Governance Committee and Audit Committee member of Scholastic Corporation, the world’s largest publisher and distributor of children’s books and a leader in educational technology. Scholastic Corporation is a NASDAQ listed company.
He is also a board member and treasurer for two non-profit organizations, United Neighborhood Houses (UNH) of New York, which provides neighborhood-based social services in the New York area, and The Ad Council, whose public service advertising raises awareness and promotes action on significant public issues.
Mr. Barge is a member of the Advisory Council for The SEC Institute and past member of the Financial Executive Institute’s Committee on Corporate Reporting. He is also a distinguished practitioner lecturer for the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia and a member of the alumni board. Mr. Barge graduated summa cum laude from the University of Georgia with a degree in business administration and is a member of the AICPA.
